A Matter of Life and Death

I suppose I should mention that Iron Maiden released their latest studio album, A Matter of Life and Death, yesterday. If you haven't had a chance to purchase it yet, and I haven't (I'm a bad fan), head over to AOL and listen to the entire album online.

I've been a little "out of touch" with Iron Maiden since 'Fear of the Dark' came out in 1992, and to be honest haven't really cared about anything they have done since then. Then in 1995 the miserable 'X Factor' album came out, noticeably missing the voice of Bruce Dickinson. I basically had thought Iron Maiden was done for, and any reunion would only be for the sake of filling empty bank accounts.
The release of 'A Matter of Life and Death' has proven my prediction wrong. (Either that, or they just happened to write a really good album in the pursuit of financial reward.)
The new album musically touches on everything they have done from 82's 'Number of the Beast', to what I thought their last great album was - 88's '7th Son of a 7th Son'. The bass patterns have returned to that rolling three finger technique Steve Harris is so known for, while the guitars carry intricate melodies. Not to mention the lyrics have strongly returned to the story telling structure Iron Maiden is popularly known for.
Bruce Dickinson is the only vocalist I know that can deliver on every album. While some of his ideas in the past may have been questionable (Tattooed millionaire anyone?), he has always been a consistent singer.
If you've ever been a fan of the band, pick up this album. It's likely to remind you of everything great they've done while adding just a little bit more.
"UP THE IRONS!"

Excellent. I am so glad you like it. I myself am on my third listen, and I love it.
I want to echo the sentiments of other reviews by saying it gets better the more I listen to it. There is so much more to this album both musically and lyrically (at least that is the best way I can describe it) than previous albums. It feels like a departure for them, yet one I enjoy immensely.

I have read many good reviews and am looking forward to hearing; just haven't had time due to work and moving to a new apartment.
I found this story yesterday about Bruce helping out in Lebanon. Take that Bono.
